"The pastor’s wife is Tired, Y'all: Why We Need to Stop Glorifying Ministry Burnout"
Let’s just pull the curtain back all the way, because I know I am not the only one who has sat in the back row of a sanctuary—or hidden in the green room—breathing through a minor panic attack while trying to look completely "holier-than-thou" before stepping onto the stage or platform.
Look, being a female pastor, a pastor’s wife, a worship leader, or a ministry director is a beautiful, deeply rewarding calling. But can we be completely real for two seconds? It is also utterly exhausting. There’s this unwritten, unspoken rule in both the Black church and the contemporary white church spaces that women in leadership are supposed to be spiritual superheroes. If you're a female pastor, you have to out-study and out-prep everyone else just to be taken seriously in the boardroom. If you're a worship leader, you're expected to manufacture pure, unadulterated joy on stage even when your own soul is running on fumes. And if you're a pastor's wife, you better run that women's auxiliary, look immaculate in the front pew, smile through unsolicited feedback about your family, and hold down the fort without ever breaking a sweat or raising an eyebrow.
But baby, your nervous system does not care about your title or your ministry assignment.
When you spend your entire life pouring into everyone else’s spiritual cup, who is pouring into yours? We have glorified chronic exhaustion as if it's a fruit of the Spirit. We wear burnout like a badge of holy honor. But let me tell you something: God did not design your body to operate on permanent high alert. When you are constantly on edge, your sympathetic nervous system is running the show, releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that disrupt everything from your sleep to your digestion.
The Bible-Backed Reality Shift:
If Jesus took naps in the middle of literal storms (Mark 4:38), why do we think we have to work through our own? Rest is not a luxury you earn after you break down; it is a divine command. God established Sabbath rest before sin even entered the world! You have permission to sit down, drop the mic, and breathe.
